Book club mavens Jenna Bush Hager, Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon united in person for the first time on March 11, all in support of — you guessed it — a book.
Amy Griffin, the founder of venture capital firm G9 Ventures, wrote about buried childhood trauma in the memoir "The Tell," which was chosen as an Oprah's Book Club pick.
At a book event, Winfrey invited Jenna and Witherspoon on stage to celebrate the moment.
On TODAY March 12, Savannah Guthrie, who also attended the event, explained how awesome it was to see the three women get together.
“Listen to what had happened,” Savannah said. “In the same room, last night at this book event, Oprah comes and she sees Reese and Jenna sitting in the audience and calls them up. Three iconic book divas right there under one roof. How neat is that?”
Jenna jumped in and shared her perspective.
“It was so cool,” Jenna added on the show. “When Oprah said that, I turned crimson. I couldn’t believe it. She’s like, ‘Only Amy Griffin who wrote this book, ‘The Tell,’ who is friends of Savannah and mine, could get all three of us in the room. Y’all come up.’ It was so cool.”
On Instagram, Savannah shared a video of the moment that Jenna, Witherspoon and Winfrey got on stage together and you can hear Winfrey saying, "We're all here for Amy Griffin," as the crowd cheered.
Savannah captioned the video, "Only one incredible person could get these three reading divas @jennabhager @reesewitherspoon @oprah together under one roof for one book #TheTell by @amygriffin."
Winfrey also took to Instagram to get her followers to read "The Tell." In a short clip, she explained what the book is about and why it's so important to read.
"It's an extraordinary memoir by an author who ran literally from the dirt roads where she grew up in Texas to the streets of New York City in search of perfection as a wife, as a mother, as a highly successful business woman. But what she did not realize was that she was running from something that she had buried many years ago."
"And then one night, her young daughter tells her, 'Mom, you're really nice, you're here with us, but you're actually not here.' And then she starts to embark on this incredible journey that leads to the discovery of a childhood secret."
Winfrey said she was "floored" when she read Griffin's book because it made her realize how "powerful the desire to forget is, and also how powerful the desire to remember is and how your life can change when you reconcile the two."
"The Tell" is now available to purchase.
