Sean Astin has gone from locking lips to loose lips.

Yes, Astin is spilling the beans about his kiss in “The Goonies” and how it didn’t exactly pan out as he expected.

Fans of the beloved movie about a group of desperate treasure-hunting kids know the scene: Kerri Green’s Andy grabs Astin’s Mikey during a down moment and gives him a smooch, thinking it’s Mikey’s brother, Brand, played by Josh Brolin.

At the end of the movie, Brand and Andy pucker up, much to the dismay of Mikey (and Astin).

“I misread the script,” Astin said in a joint interview with “Goonies” cast members Green, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, Joe Pantoliano and Robert Davi that aired April 7 on TODAY. “And I thought the kiss at the end was the same, too. I thought I had stolen her from the brother. So when I’m looking at them kiss at the end, I was really bummed.”

“I feel so terrible,” Green said while laughing.

“The Goonies,” which came out in 1985, has enjoyed a shelf life most films can only dream of achieving.

“They don’t make movies like this anymore,” Pantoliano said.

“The real magic is the moral of the story, because the moral of the story is it’s a bunch of kids trying to save their families, trying to save their friendships, and trying keep their community strong,” Feldman said.

Plimpton also points out how the film grew in popularity on the secondary market.

“It’s life really came out of the advent of video rental and cable. And it resonated so much with kids because they could watch it over and over,” she said.

Davi, who played one-half of the villainous Fratelli brothers, along with Pantoliano, also said it was a treat to work with so many young stars.

“Seeing all these wonderful talents blossoming and their creativity, it was just much fun to terrorize them,” he said.

No one could have known it at the time, but one of those young talents, who would blossom into a full-fledged force, was Ke Huy Quan, who won an Academy Award in 2023 for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

Several “Goonies” cast members turned out when he was honored in February in a handprint and footprint ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, sparking more chatter about a sequel that has been talked about for decades. Later that month, Warner Bros. confirmed a sequel is in the works. Writer Chris Columbus and Steven Spielberg, who conceived the idea for the film and produced the original movie, are set to produce the second installment.

It’s unclear if any of the original film’s stars will appear in it.

“I can tell you for sure, Spielberg and Chris Columbus have a recipe, and they’re planning on something. We wish them well. And if they come to us, we’ll consider it at that time,” Feldman said.

Astin also says Spielberg’s involvement in the sequel points to the idea that it must be good.

“After it came out, Steven Spielberg sent me a poster saying, ‘I’m still a Goonie. How about you?’” he said

“He’s wanted to make the sequel, and he’s the sole reason it hasn’t been made now because it hasn’t been right. The fact that he’s endorsing this next thing is why we know it’s going to happen, and it’s why it has every chance to be spectacular.”
